Contemporising the Roots

This year, we’re hosting our third Confluence dedicated to the theme: Contemporizing the Roots. We’ll discuss the importance of making folk music relevant in today’s world, understanding the challenges specifically in Nepal, and exploring its potential as a musical genre beyond Nepal. Working professionals will share their perspectives on the current state of traditional music in Nepal, and brainstorm to imagine new sustainable futures.

PANELISTS
Kali Prasad Banskota is a musician who works primarily in Nepali films. His use of folk melodies in songs like Sainli and Jalaima have had an important role in popularizing folk melodies among a new generation of audiences. Banskota was also a judge of the reality TV show Nepal Idol.
Smarika Phuyal is an ethnomusicology undergrad from Kathmandu University. She has worked as a music composer and performer in various theatrical productions at Shilpee Theatre (Hiunko Prithvi Yatra, Dikshyanta etc). Currently, she's working as a live musician in a reality TV show The Poet Idol, where she recreates folk melodies.
Pavit Maharjan is a member of the band Kutumba. Pavit mostly plays percussion instruments including the Nepali drum madal. Kutumba is a leading folk band in Nepal which has performed Nepali folk music at many national and international venues.
Bulu Mukarung is a musician and music historian. With more than three decades of experience at the state institution Radio Nepal, his living memory is itself an archive of music history. His book Nepali Sangeet ko Abhilekh contains an exhaustive list of past and present musicians of Nepal.
Pushpa Palanchoke is an applied ethnomusicologist who is currently active as programme manager of Folk Lok. Most recently, Folk Lok helped a traditional bhajan group in Kirtipur open up to women musicians for the first time.
Dhrubesh Chandra Regmi is the head of the Central Department of Fine Arts at Tribhuvan University, which includes the music department. He is the founder and sitar player of the band Sukarma.
Basanti Chaudhary is a singer based in Lamahi Dang. Her involvement in art challenges the stereotypes of society regarding women's empowerment, which has a long history of caste and class struggles.
Sarada Dangol is a musician, madal player, and founder of Shree Tara, an all women instrumental band in Nepal. She is also the founder of DhingTang Nepal which encourages women to play music instruments via courses and lessons.
Semduk Lama is from Shey Phoksundo, Dolpa, one of the msot remote parts of Nepal. He is working to promote the local folk music of his community by writing down the songs, teaching them at his school, and making audio-visual documentations of them. His wish is to preserve the music for new generations so that they can experience what he feels when he hears such music.
Tsering Dolma Lama is a teacher. She was a vocalist in different bands like JOTs (Progressive rock) and Didibahini (Ethnic pop). Didibahini was an all-female band which collected women's experiences, rhymes, tunes, and cultures from various part of the country and recreated them.
This year's Confluence will be jointly organized by EITV and Raithane Music, supported by UNESCO Office in Kathmandu.
